Ranchera artist Alejandro Fernández underwent knee surgery here to repair damage done last year in a skiing mishap in Colorado, his agents said.

His publicist said the two-hour procedure at a Guadalajara hospital was successful and that Fernández "is very calm and is resting with his family around him."

The singer must undergo physical therapy for six weeks to strengthen his knee, but hopes to carry out the commitments for the performances he has scheduled for the Feb. 3-4 festivities in the city of Leon.

Alejandro Fernández, son of ranchera legend Vicente Fernández, thanked his fans for their expressions of affection and said he was sure of resuming his career in no time.

"For medical reasons I have to rest now and can't put any weight on my leg. I'll be doing my therapy so I can get back onstage as soon as possible," he said.

Recently, Dominican singer Romeo Santos said in Mexico that he will seek to share his experience and voice with Mexico's Alejandro Fernández to blend ranchera music with bachata.

The leader of the now-defunct band Aventura confessed at a press conference in the Mexican capital that his greatest "challenge" is to be able to disseminate his music and share it with other artists of different genres and countries.

"I would like to collaborate with Alejandro Fernández to be able to mix genres. It would be interesting to mix bachata with rancheras," said the artist, adding that every day he listens to Canadian Michael Buble and Mexicans Vicente Fernández and Juan Gabriel.

Santos is in Mexico City to promote his new solo album "Formula Vol. 1," which includes collaborations with well-known artists like Mexico's Mario Domm from the group Camila; Spaniards La Mala Rodríguez and Tomati, and the urban singers Usher, Lil Wayne and Pitbull.
